Needle Exchange
Needle exchange continues to keep the same numbers as last year.
A number of people are now presenting and looking for green needles since they are doing steroids. Anyone needing injecting equipment for steroids and present on Fridays around 6 pm. They are supplied free of charge.
Cutbacks
CARP and other HSE projects have been informed recently that they will have their funding cut back by 2% and not 1% as previously informed. They have also been informed that there will be further cut backs during the year.
Funding from other agencies will also be cut back but as yet there is no definite amount being mentioned.
FAS has cut back our CE places by 3.
Cocaine Project
Our cocaine outreach worker, Sharon Masterson, has been doing trojan work putting posters up to advertise the project. One ad company rang to complain that we were making their ads difficult to read. They threatened us with the litter warden!!!!
St Patrick's Day
Enjoy yourselves but do so sensibly on the public holiday Tuesday next when we celebrate the feast of our national apostle - St Patrick.
A number of our participants have asked that they can come and give a urine sample on the Wednesday to help them stay off drugs on the feast day.
'Posh' Tallaght raises hackles.
Our cocaine statistics found their way unknowns to us into a local paper 'Tallaght Voice' and they showed the pie chart of the geographical distribution of clients. The use of the word 'post' was a shorthand from where people presenting came from in the Tallaght Area and was an attempt to show that more than working class people had a problem with drugs. We are not in a position to expect candidates divulge their professional occupations i.e. ABC1.
Breaking news on Hep C
Danny Morris from England provided needle exchange in late November. The course was excellent.
He surprised us with new research that shows that Hep C can only survive outside the body for about 2 days. Previously it was believed to be up to 30 days. This should be good news for people who might be pricked with discarded needles.
Community Addiction Studies, ITT
Projects presented last Wednesday 10th March 2009 were excellent.
Topics included: Cocaine, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, Tallaght Rehabilitation Project, Cocaine, Nicotine Addiction, Death through Overdose.
Mater Hospital
Yesterday I visited a CARP participant I have known since he was in Killinarden Community School in 1991 in the Mater Hospital. He was in the ICU and I was given permission by his family to visit him. He is in a coma and may be able to hear. I found myself quite upset and I ask that you keep him and his family in your prayers. Out of confidentiality we don't give the name of any participant.
